Gujarat Titans (GT) registered their first victory of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season with a commanding 36-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Saturday. GT put up a strong all-round performance to outclass MI and earn crucial points early in the tournament.

A Strong Start for Gujarat Titans

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, GT openers set an aggressive tone in the powerplay. Sai Sudharsan led the charge with a brilliant half-century, scoring 63 runs and providing the team with a solid foundation. Alongside Shubman Gill, the opening duo made the most of the fielding restrictions and ensured the team got off to a flying start.

Despite the good start, MI bowlers fought back in the middle overs, led by Hardik Pandya, who dismissed Shubman Gill early to halt GT’s momentum. Jos Buttler played a key role in keeping the runs flowing, but MI managed to restrict GT to 196/8 in 20 overs, a challenging but achievable target.

Mumbai Indians Struggle to Chase the Target

Chasing 197, MI’s batting lineup failed to find momentum against GT’s disciplined bowling attack. Mohammed Siraj gave the hosts the perfect start by dismissing both Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton within the powerplay, putting MI under immediate pressure.

Suryakumar Yadav tried to anchor the chase, playing a valiant knock of 48 off 28 balls, which included four sixes and a boundary. However, his efforts were cut short as Prasidh Krishna bowled a sensational spell, finishing with figures of 2/12 in four overs, removing both Tilak Varma and Yadav to derail MI’s chase.

GT bowlers continued their dominance, with Mujeeb ur Rahman also making an impact by dismissing Jos Buttler, who had been looking dangerous at 39 off 24 balls. With MI losing wickets at regular intervals and struggling to accelerate, they fell short of the target, managing only 160/9 in their 20 overs.

Key Performances That Sealed GT’s Victory

  • Sai Sudharsan’s Knock: A crucial 63-run innings that set up GT’s total.
  • Prasidh Krishna’s Spell: His exceptional 2/12 ensured MI couldn’t build partnerships.
  • Mohammed Siraj’s Early Strikes: His precision bowling removed MI’s openers, giving GT a strong start.
  • Mujeeb ur Rahman’s Impact: Dismissing Buttler at the right time helped GT tighten their grip on the game.

Injury Concern for GT

A slight concern for GT arose when Sai Sudharsan had to leave the field during MI’s innings due to a suspected hamstring injury while diving to save a boundary. The extent of his injury is yet to be confirmed by the team management.

Brief Scores: Gujarat Titans: 196/8 in 20 overs (Sai Sudharsan 63; Hardik Pandya 2/29) Mumbai Indians: 160/9 in 20 overs (Suryakumar Yadav 48; Prasidh Krishna 2/12)
