Gujarat Titans’ 25-year-old all-rounder, Washington Sundar, was surprisingly left out of the team for their IPL 2025 match against Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday, April 9.
The 23rd match of IPL 2025 between Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals is being played at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Washington Sundar Surprising Omission from Gujarat Titans’ XI
Washington Sundar made his debut for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025 on April 6 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He missed the first three matches but was brought in as a batsman at No. 4 after early wickets. Sundar played a crucial role in a 90-run partnership with Shubman Gill, scoring 49 off 29 balls, just one run shy of a half-century.
Despite his strong performance, Sundar was surprisingly dropped from the team for the match against Rajasthan Royals.
Although Sundar was seen ready to bat during the first innings, he didn’t make it into the playing XI as Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler managed to stabilize the innings after Shubman Gill’s early dismissal. Sundar could still be brought into the team for the second innings if Gujarat Titans need his off-spin.

Why Washington Sundar not part of GT batting?#GTvsRR

GT literally has no batting depth. Despite that they benched Washington Sundar . Loosing to RR won’t be surprising.

Sundar Responds to Misquote and Reflects on His Preparation
During the pre-match press conference, Washington Sundar had a tense moment with a reporter after being misquoted.
The journalist asked, “You had to wait for the fourth game to get a chance, and someone mentioned on air that you played two games and 14 international games last season.”
Sundar responded, “What’s the question?” The reporter then clarified, “You apparently said, ‘I got only two IPL matches and 14 international games.'”
Sundar appeared frustrated and said, “I said that? When did I say that? Did you hear me say that?” After the reporter explained that it was a commentator, not Sundar, who made the statement, Sundar calmed down and gave a more professional reply.
He said that he had been preparing well and was eager for an opportunity to play for Gujarat Titans. Sundar explained:
“I was definitely looking for the opportunity and was preparing really well. To be a part of the Titans is a great blessing because we practise for long hours. Our coach believes in putting in volumes, especially when it comes to improving in different aspects of the game, and it’s been great for me. That way, I know for a fact that I am always improving, and whenever the opportunity comes, I will be prepared.”
