The Women’s World Chess Championship 2025 is a highly anticipated match between two of China’s top chess players, the reigning champion Ju Wenjun and the challenger Tan Zhongyi. The championship is a part of the FIDE Women’s World Championship Cycle 2023-2025 and is being held in two cities: Shanghai, Wenjun’s hometown, and Chongqing, Zhongyi’s hometown. The tournament started on 3 April, and the final match will be played on 21 April 2025.
The match consists of 12 games, with the first six games played in Shanghai and the remaining six in Chongqing. If the score is tied at 6-6 after all 12 games, a tiebreaker will determine the champion in the latter city. The championship is also notable due to its significant prize pool of $540,000.
Ju Wenjun is leading the Women’s World Chess Championship 2025
Ju Wenjun is currently leading the Women’s World Chess Championship 2025 against Tan Zhongyi with a commanding score of 4-2 after six games of Shanghai. Ju showcased her dominance throughout the championship by winning three games while losing only one and drawing two. She now only needs 2.5 more points to retain her title.
Despite Tan Zhongyi struggling in the first half of the championship, she could turn the game around as now she’s going to have a home advantage since the upcoming six games will be played in Chongqing. She’s also a former world champion, winning the title in 2017-18 until Ju Wenjun took the title and currently holds it.
The time control for each game is 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 3p seconds per move starting from move 1. The first player to score 6.5 points will be declared the winner, so if she manages to secure just 2.5 points, she will become the World Champion once again.
