4 Min Read

Reverse swing magic has been spread in the IPL 2025 from the start. With this variation in the armor of bowlers, they got an upper hand in the death overs over batsmen who have had all the advantage till now in the season due to flat batting pitches.

The previous IPL season witnessed an increase in the average total of the tournament, where surpassing 200 became normal, and bowlers felt helpless throughout the season. With the new rule in play, bowlers got an edge this season and controlled the run flow.

What is Reverse Swing Magic?

Reverse swing comes into play when the ball is old and the team maintains one side of the ball by shining it consecutively after each ball. One side of the ball is maintained with a shine, whereas the other side of the ball is left as it is. After a few overs, when the ball bears damage after being hit, bowlers use the shiny side of the ball to move towards or away from the batsman in the air.

If the bowler bowls it with the shiny side on the right, then the ball will swing inside for a right-handed batter, whereas if the shiny side is on the left, then the ball will tail away from the right-handed batter. This swing is different from conventional swing as, along with the shiny side, a bowler can also increase or decrease the degree of the direction while bowling, which gives an extra push to the swing.

  • Saliva Ban- This was lifted after a long time. When the covid came, the ban on the use of saliva was levied, but after 5 years, this ban was lifted to give an extra edge to bowlers, and the results were clear. Bowlers like Arshdeep Singh, Jofra Archer, Yash Dull, and Mitchell Starc etc among many others, got a major benefit due to this.
  • Two Bouncers in an over- Earlier, only one bouncer was allowed to bowl in an over, but with an extra bouncer, now bowlers can easily depend on their variations in the tough situations, as a sharp bouncer is always a great weapon in the armory of a bowler to use in the time of need.
  • Two New Balls- Now, a team can use two new balls while bowling. This rule benefits a lot as when the due disrupts the seam of the ball and bowlers find it difficult to grip while bowling, they can change the ball and use it to their advantage.
