The Norway Chess 2025 Round 8 delivered a dramatic result with shocking upsets and amazing results both in the open and women’s section. The tournament is being hosted in Stavanger, Norway, and is now nearing its end with the final round scheduled for 6 June 2025.
The event picked up headlines after the Gukesh vs. Carlsen clash, where Gukesh took a shocking win, marking his first-ever win against Carlsen in classical format. The reigning world champion was in good form the following day as well, where he defeated Arjun Erigiasi, however, he fell short of luck in round 8, so let’s take a look at the results.

Hikaru Nakamura vs. D Gukesh
While Nakamura met Gukesh in a clash earlier in the tournament, where he lost, he claimed a commanding victory at this one. Gukesh, who had been riding high after consecutive victories, stumbled and made mistakes, allowing Nakamura to secure an easy win in the Norway Chess 2025 round 8.

Magnus Carlsen vs. Wei Yi
Magnus Carlsen, the local favourite and world number 1, could not secure a win, although the game ended in a draw where Wei Yi won the Armageddon tiebreaker. Wei Yi has now defeated Carlsen twice in this event, which is a rare feat.
Arjun Erigaisi vs. Fabiano Caruana
The tournament leader, Fabiano Caruana, started with a winning position, however, he fumbled later in the game, allowing Erigiasi to take a commanding victory and score 3 points.

Koneru Humpy vs. Sara Khadem
In the women’s section, Koneru Humpy defeated Sara Khadem in the only classical win of the Norway Chess 2025 round 8, regaining her lead in the women’s standing.
Vaishali Rameshbabu vs. Ju Wenjun
Vaishali Rameshbabu scored her first-ever win over women’s world champion Ju Wenjun, in a game that ended in a draw and was later followed by an Armageddon tiebreaker.
Lei Tingjei vs. Anna Muzychuk
Lei Tingjie suffered an Armageddon defeat by Anna Muzychuk in the Norway Chess 2025 round 8.
