The Canadian Grand Prix was reaching its final laps, and it was a pretty boring race, with no high-stakes overtakes other than Kimi Antonelli passing Oscar Piastri in the beginning. Now, heading to the final laps, Lando Norris decided to unleash his inner beast. After starting from seventh on the grid, he managed to get to the fifth place through the race; however, he wanted to be in contention for the top 4.

This led him to hunt down his teammate Oscar Piastri, and on lap 67, he attempted to overtake Piastri into the Turn 10 hairpin. While it seemed like he could pull this off initially, he tried to dive down to the inside into Turn 1 on the next lap, to a gap that was too small for him to pass. This led him to contact Piastri’s rear tire and sent him off to the wall, ending the race immediately. Even though Norris did not lose his position in the Driver’s Championship, he still lost valuable points for himself and the team.

The Canadian Grand Prix 2025 was the most unpredictable race of the F1 season 2025 so far. Take a look at this article to know the key highlights and full list or winners.

Lando Norris immediately took full responsibility for the contact. Over the team radio, he quickly apologised, mentioning, “That was a stupid mistake, I’m sorry guys.” He also left his own interview to apologise to Piastri personally. He later told the media that he was aware of the valuable points his move cost the team. He said, “I thought there was a gap, but it just wasn’t there. I messed up and I’ve cost the team valuable points.”

However, even after such an incident, Norris and Piastri were seen interacting pretty normally, dismissing any potential rivalry that could ruin their friendship.

What Penalties Lando Norris Faced Or Could Face

The FIA stewards reviewed the incident and handed Norris a five-second time penalty for causing a collision, although he didn’t even finish the race. He retired after the incident, and the penalty had no effect on his finishing position, but it will be noted on his super license as a part of the penalty points system.

Now, while the penalty was relatively light, it cost Lando Norris other implications. His crash not only cost him a fourth or fifth place finish, but it also cost him 12 points, which widened the gap between Oscar Piastri and him in the Standings with 22 points.

There is a little possibility that he will face additional penalties beyond the ineffective five-second penalty. For now, Norris’ immediate concern is to rebuild momentum and avoid further errors.
