Former Arsenal Midfielder Thomas Partey Charged with Multiple Counts of Rape and Sexual Assault
Thomas Partey, the former Arsenal and Ghana international midfielder, has been formally charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, the Metropolitan Police confirmed on Thursday. The alleged offences involve three different women and are said to have taken place between 2021 and 2022.
According to the police statement, two of the rape charges relate to one woman, while three others concern a second woman. The sexual assault charge involves a third complainant. Partey, 32, denies all allegations. In a statement through his lawyer, he expressed that he “welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.”
The charges come after a lengthy investigation by the Met’s Central Specialist Crime unit, which began in February 2022 following an initial report of rape. Det Supt Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, stated:
“Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward. We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team.”
The public can contact the investigation team by emailing [email protected].
Partey, who resides in Hertfordshire, is expected to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 5 August.
His lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, added in a statement:
“Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name.
Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further.”
The Ghanaian international’s contract with Arsenal officially ended on Monday, following a four-year stint at the North London club. Partey joined Arsenal in October 2020 from Atlético Madrid for a reported £45.3 million fee. During his time with the Gunners, he made 130 Premier League appearances, scoring nine goals.
Partey featured in 35 league games, scoring four goals as Arsenal finished second in the Premier League
In the 2023–24 season, Partey featured in 35 league games, scoring four goals as Arsenal finished second in the Premier League. He also made 12 appearances in the UEFA Champions League, with the club reaching the semi-finals before being eliminated by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain.
On the international front, Partey has over 50 caps for Ghana, most recently appearing in the national team’s World Cup qualifiers earlier this year.
