Aiden Markram Named ICC Player of the Month for June
The 30-year-old played a key role in the Proteas’ historic win, scoring a brilliant 136 runs and picking up two crucial wickets. His efforts not only earned him the Player of the Match award but also helped South Africa end a 27-year wait for a major ICC trophy.
South African opener Aiden Markram stepped up when it mattered most, delivering one of the standout performances in World Test Championship history to lead his team to their first-ever title in the competition.
“It is a privilege to receive this award. To contribute to a ICC World Test Championship win for our team and South Africa is something that means a lot to me,” Aiden Markram said after being named Player of the Month.
“Winning the final at Lord’s is a historic moment for South African cricket, and it is something we will all remember forever. This victory was only possible due to the combined efforts of the entire team, with crucial contributions from KC (Kagiso Rabada) and Tembs (Temba Bavuma),” he added.
Aiden Markram’s influence on the match started with the ball, when he was brought in to break a threatening partnership between Steve Smith and Beau Webster. He made an immediate impact, dismissing Smith with just his sixth delivery – a crucial breakthrough that set the tone for what would become a memorable performance.
His first innings with the bat didn’t go to plan, falling for a duck to Mitchell Starc. But Markram saved his best for the second innings. With South Africa still 74 runs behind and Australia’s last-wicket pair adding a vital 59 runs, the pressure was mounting. Aiden Markram responded again – first by taking the final wicket of Josh Hazlewood, then by shifting momentum with the bat, producing a game-changing knock.
Chasing a tough target of 282, Markram held the innings together with calmness and determination. Even after the early dismissal of Ryan Rickelton, he built crucial partnerships, first with Wiaan Mulder, then with skipper Temba Bavuma. When Bavuma had an injury scare and wasn’t sure if he could carry on, it was Markram’s encouragement in the dressing room that gave him the confidence to continue. Together, they put on a brave stand that brought South Africa within touching distance of victory.
Aiden Markram eventually departed for a magnificent 136, a knock full of focus, resilience, and world-class strokeplay. It wasn’t just a match-winning innings; it was a performance that sealed a historic moment and wrote Markram’s name into South African cricket history.
