India has just added another shining star to its illustrious list. Meet Rohith Krishna S, India’s 89th Chess Grandmaster, a young, determined player who is making the nation proud with his brilliant chess skills.
Who is Rohith Krishna S?
Rohith Krishna S was born in 2005 and started showing his chess talent quite early. His journey began with earning titles step by step. In 2017, he became a Candidate Master, and two years later, in 2019, he earned the FIDE Master title.
Rohith didn’t stop there. By 2022, he had achieved the International Master status, climbing steadily toward the pinnacle of chess mastery. Finally, in 2025, he reached the ultimate mark by becoming a Grandmaster, the highest title in chess, awarded by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).
What makes this feat so special?
Becoming a Grandmaster is no easy task. A player must achieve three Grandmaster “norms” (performances at a very high level in strong tournaments) and maintain a FIDE rating of at least 2500 at some point.
Rohith Krishna S reached this milestone by performing exceptionally well at the Almaty Masters Qonaev Cup in Kazakhstan, scoring six points out of nine games and crossing the 2500 ELO rating mark. This performance earned him his final GM norm, securing his place among the global chess elite.
Rohith Krishna S has been coached by K. Visweswaran, who has played a key role in shaping his chess career. The young talent has participated in several important tournaments and even won titles like the 2nd Maharashtra GM Open 2023, the 19th Malakoff Open in France, and the Ostravský Koník Open A in the Czech Republic. These successes have built his confidence and strengthened his reputation in the competitive chess circuit.
A Bright Future Ahead
Rohith Krishna S now joins this elite group as the 89th Grandmaster, marking another milestone in India’s chess history. With his eyes set on bigger goals, Rohith Krishna S will hopefully continue to shine on the international stage, making his country proud and inspiring the next generation of chess champions.
In a game of kings and queens, strategy and patience, Rohith has confidently claimed his throne as India’s newest chess Grandmaster. The future looks bright for this young star, and Indian chess fans can’t wait to watch what he achieves next.
