BCCI Explains Why Shreyas Iyer And Yashasvi Jaiswal Missed India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad: The BCCI has announced India’s 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025, with Suryakumar Yadav set to lead the team. The announcement, however, came with two big surprises: Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer were not included. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar later opened up about why the two missed out.

Ajit Agarkar Explains Why Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer Missed Out

India’s squad is full of match-winners, but leaving out Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shreyas Iyer raised a lot of eyebrows among fans. With players like Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Tilak Varma performing so well in recent series, the selectors found it tough to reshuffle the lineup to fit everyone in.

Speaking at the squad announcement in Mumbai alongside captain Suryakumar Yadav, Ajit Agarkar clarified why Jaiswal and Iyer didn’t make the cut. He said that Abhishek Sharma’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball gave the team extra flexibility, which tilted things in his favor over Jaiswal.

With regards to Yashasvi Jaiswal, I mean it’s just unfortunate again. Abhishek Sharma, what he’s done over the last few months or a year or so that he’s been with the team. Plus, that he can bowl a little bit gives us an option, if required, by the captain,” Agarkar said.

“One of these guys was always going to miss out. It’s just unfortunate that Yashasvi might have to wait for his chance. With regards to Shreyas, I mean, we can replace that. Again, no fault of his. Nor is it ours. It’s just that he can pick 15 and, at the moment, he might have to wait for his chance.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Journey So Far

Jaiswal was part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad last year, though he didn’t get a game during the tournament. Since then, under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy, India have played 20 T20Is and won 17 of them, an impressive 85 percent success rate.

Individually, Jaiswal has been in great touch. In IPL 2025, he scored 559 runs in 14 matches at an average of 43 with a strike rate of 159.71. For India, he has 723 runs from 22 T20Is at an average of 36.15, which includes a century. His last international series came against Sri Lanka in 2024, where he scored 80 runs across three innings at a strike rate of 177.

Shreyas Iyer: Stellar IPL 2025 Season, Yet Overlooked

Shreyas Iyer’s omission was equally surprising, especially considering the kind of IPL season he had. The Punjab Kings captain scored 604 runs in IPL 2025 at a strike rate of 175.07, leading his team all the way to the finals before they lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

While his absence from the Test setup wasn’t a shock, not finding a place in the T20I squad has puzzled many. Iyer hasn’t played a T20I since December 2023, and with Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma locked in at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, his way back might depend on injuries or fitness concerns in the current squad.
