The Men’s Hockey Asia Cup is a men’s international field hockey tournament organized by the Asian Hockey Federation. The winning team becomes the champion of Asia and qualifies for the FIH Hockey World Cup.
South Korea are the defending champions, having won the 2022 edition. The next edition is scheduled to take place in August-September 2025. South Korea have won the most titles with five. India and Pakistan have both won the tournament three times.
The hosts together with the six highest-ranked teams from the previous edition directly qualify for the tournament. They are joined by the top team from the Men’s AHF Cup or the top two teams if the host is already qualified.
Notably, only three countries have won the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup title.
South Korea (5)
South Korea is the most successful nation in the history of Men’s Hockey Asia Cup. The country won its first title back in 1994 in Hiroshima, Japan when they defeated India 1–0 in the final.
Their second trophy came in 1999 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, winning their second title in consecutive editions prevailing over Pakistan 5-4 in a tightly fought final. Their third title was won in Kuantan, Malaysia in 2009 when they again defeated Pakistan 1-0 in the final.
South Korea once again won the title in 2023 in Ipoh, Malaysia defeating India 4–3 in the final. In 2007, they defeated South Korea 7–2 at home in Chennai.
Pakistan (3)
Pakistan have clinched three Men’s Asia Cup titles in its hockey history, and all three of the trophies were won on the trot- 1982, 1985 and 1989. It remains the only country to win the title in three consecutive editions. And, interestingly, they won all their final matches against one country- India.
India (3)
India has won a total of three titles in the history of Men’s Hockey Asia Cup. Their first title came in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2003 when they defeated arch-rival Pakistan 4–2 in the final. Their latest title came in 2017 in Dhaka, Bangladesh as they beat an emerging Malaysia 2-1 in the final.
Interestingly, India have finished as runners-up on five occasions- the most by any nation.
