In a dominant display, South Africa (SA) trounced England (ENG) to take the SA vs ENG ODI Series 1-0. The match was complete in just 272 balls, and the difference in preparation and execution between the two teams was evident for all to see, with Keshav Mahraj’s brilliant performance with the ball taking 4 wickets.
England got out early, and this 4-wicket haul led him to the Player of the Match award as well. While England’s batting line-up fell for one of their lowest scores against South Africa, the Proteas chased it in style in just 21 overs.
England’s Batting Falters – All Out in 24.3 Overs
England’s batters, perhaps still adjusting after a month in the Hundred, failed to deliver. They were bowled out for just 147 balls, their fourth-lowest ODI score vs South Africa. Despite early boundaries from Jamie Smith, Joe Root, and Ben Duckett, England’s innings unraveled rapidly due to poor shot selection and disciplined bowling.
Clinical Bowling by Maharaj and Mulder
Keshav Maharaj, who is currently the No.1 ICC ODI bowler, took 4 wickets in his third ODI four-for. Wiaan Mulder had one of his finest spells in an ODI, taking 3 for 33, the only other occasion he has taken 3 wickets in an ODI. South Africa retained all 7 catching opportunities, showing a better fielding performance after a sub-par effort in Australia.
Markram’s Record-Breaking Fifty Seals the Win
Aiden Markram dazzled and played a scintillating innings, scoring the fastest ODI fifty by a SA opener in just 23 balls. He led the SA chase, and he was the dominant partner in the 121-run first-wicket partnership with Ryan Rickelton.
Markram took on boundaries at will against Sonny Baker, and Baker’s debut figures of 7-0-76-0 represent the most expensive debut by an England bowler. Markram was run out one short of a hundred; he was caught by Smith and impacted for just 11 runs. After a slight wobble with quick wickets falling, Dewald Brevis produced the winning hit with a six.
England’s Missed Opportunities and Bad Decisions
England had their opportunity early:
Rickelton rode out a close caught-behind chance by Jofra Archer, one which might have been overturned using a review Hawk-Eye later confirmed it would’ve clipped leg stump. There were a few dismissals which were soft ones: Brook’s run-out, Buttler’s inside edge, and Jacks’ return catch.
Middle and lower-order England collapse (7 wickets for 29 runs) faced high-quality spin and seam, but also revealed substandard decision-making and shot choices.

Tactical Masterclass by Temba Bavuma
South African captain Temba Bavuma was right to bowl first. His seamers found early swing, and his bowlers executed their plans well. The Proteas also played in an aggressive and attacking manner, the style of play they want to develop in this period leading into the 2027 Cricket World Cup.
