Gukesh D is under fire once again. Just a few days ago, he received criticism from the legend Garry Kasparov himself, who claimed that he is not worthy of the world champion title and that Magnus Carlsen is still the best there is. Now, just ahead of the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025, Uzbek chess Grandmaster Nodirbek Abdusattorov made a light-hearted comment, which has once again sparked controversy on Gukesh’s title.
Nodirbek Abdusattorov’s “Unpopular” Opinion
When asked about his most “unpopular opinion” by the FIDE media, he said, “Gukesh will lose his title in the next match. Is that controversial?” I mean, it’s definitely controversial, but if we look at the amount of hate and criticism Gukesh has received after becoming the world champion, this is clearly not an “unpopular” opinion. If anything, it’s a very popular opinion since many other chess legends like Magnus Carlsen, Garry Kasparov, etc., think similarly.

The comment came at a crucial point just ahead of one of the most anticipated events of the year, FIDE Grand Swiss 2025, which features an elite lineup of the world’s strongest players in the Open section. The tournament not only carries prestige and massive prize money, but also serves as a crucial step to qualify for the Candidates Tournament.
Gukesh D To “Prove” Himself
Gukesh D has already qualified for the Candidates as he is the current world champion, yet he decided to participate in the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025 to give himself a good challenge. In his words, “There are not many super-strong open tournaments like this. It’s an opportunity for me to play differently and prove myself,”
When asked about the strongest players, he did not name the specifics, but described the Uzbek GM as “a great champion and competitor”, showcasing a calmer tone. So, as these contrasting players prepare for the FIDE Grand Swiss 2025, one thing is for sure: chess fans are in for a ride.
