West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph has been excluded from the next two-match IND vs WI Test series due to a persistent lower-back injury. Joseph, who had already recovered from a back problem, complained of discomfort while preparing for the series. Scans later detected degeneration in his already overcome lower-back injury, causing him to withdraw from the highly awaited Test matches beginning this week.

Jason Holder Refuses to Replace Joseph

In a surprising turn of events, Jason Holder, the veteran all-rounder who is in the UAE with the West Indies T20I team for a series against Nepal, has turned down the opportunity to fill the spot for Joseph in the Test team. Holder explained that he has a scheduled medical procedure planned and was unavailable. The team will have to find another option.

Jediah Blades Called Up to Replace Alzarri Joseph

To replace the void created due to the absence of Joseph, 23-year-old left-arm seamer Jediah Blades has been summoned to the Test squad. Blades, who is currently in the UAE as part of the T20I team, will report to the Test squad once the third match of the T20I series against Nepal is over.

While Blades has not yet played a Test match, he has played 13 first-class matches, taking 35 wickets at an average of 35.91. He has also played three ODIs and four T20Is for West Indies.

West Indies Pace Attack Depleted Ahead of India Test Series

The injury to Joseph leaves the West Indies pace attack greatly depleted, Shamar Joseph having been ruled out with an injury last week. The West Indies team has substituted Shamar with uncapped seam-bowling allrounder Johann Layne.

Jayden Seales is, at present, the lone bowler with relevant Test experience, having played over a dozen Tests for West Indies. This is an added burden on the team as they are all set to take on India in the first Test, to be played in Ahmedabad on October 1, 2025.

Spin Department Strengthened for India Test Series

In spite of the problems in the pace unit, the West Indies have strengthened their spin attack for the series. The team features Jomel Warrican, Khary Pierre, and skipper Roston Chase, who will give important spin options to supplement the seamers.
