In the IRE vs BAN encounter in Chattogram, Ireland beat Bangladesh by 39 runs to take a lead in the opening T20I. Driven by the Tector brothers’ power-packed batting and exceptional combined bowling, Ireland had their first victory of the year, while Bangladesh suffered their fourth successive T20I defeat.
IRE vs BAN: Tector Brothers Lay the Platform
The brilliance of Tim and Harry Tector anchored Ireland’s innings. Tim Tector then provided a scorching start to Ireland, making 32 off 19 balls, belting boundaries with ease in the powerplay.
A total of 69 not out off 45 balls inclusive of five sixes capped a superb performance by Harry Tector at the end of the innings. Both brothers’ power-hitting ensured they were on the attack from start to finish, amassing a sizeable total despite challenging conditions due to moisture and dew in the wet and humid weather.
Adair and Humphreys Dismantle Bangladesh’s Batting
It was a night where bowlers had to fight the wet ball, but Ireland’s attack was a class apart. Mark Adair, back from knee surgery, had an incendiary spell up front. His opening over was a wicket-maiden as he removed Litton Das, then removed Parvez Hossain Emon to leave Bangladesh deep in trouble.
A standout performance among all the bowlers was that of Matthew Humphreys, who had 4 wickets at a cost of just 13 runs. He took three of his four wickets during his final over, which he did enjoy doing even if the ball was very slippery due to the dew.
As a result of the hard work by both Matthew Humphreys and his fellow bowlers; Bangladesh was left 3 wickets down for no runs after the first five overs of their innings and was never fully able to recover from their terrible start.
Early Collapse of Bangladesh’s Top Order
The contest between IRE vs BAN was tilted heavily in Ireland’s favour in the first four overs. Humphreys struck first, removing Tanzid Hasan. Adair’s double strike followed shortly after, and Barry McCarthy added the wicket of Saif Hassan, who briefly offered resistance with Bangladesh’s first boundary of the innings.
Hridoy and Jaker Build Hope, But Briefly
With the asking rate climbing beyond 12 an over, Towhid Hridoy played aggressively, stroking boundaries and sixes off Josh Little and Gareth Delany. Jaker Ali then combined with him briefly in a rebuilding act, adding some precious runs before falling for 20 off 16.
Hridoy continued to fight, bringing up his fifth T20I fifty and putting 48 runs with Shoriful Islam for the ninth wicket, but the mountain became too steep to climb.
Humphreys Closes Out the Tail
In a dramatic final over of his spell, Humphreys removed Tanzim Hasan, then-after battling grip issues-dismissed Rishad Hossain (lbw) and Nasum Ahmed (stumped) in successive deliveries. Despite a few dropped catches caused by the wet ball, Ireland remained in control.
Tim Tector Sparks Ireland’s Innings
Ireland’s batting innings caught fire early, courtesy of captain Paul Stirling’s quick boundaries. But the real aggressor was Tim Tector, who went after Shoriful Islam for four fours in an over that cost 18 runs.
His inside-out strokes and point drives propelled Ireland to a brisk fifty before he fell for 32 in the ninth over. Harry Tector goes big at the death. After Tim’s dismissal, Harry Tector took over and took complete control.
A combination of clean hitting straight sixes, midwicket pulls, and long-on blasts saw Ireland’s total rise significantly. With support from Curtis Campher’s 24 off 17, Harry finished unbeaten on 69 as he smashed two big sixes in the last over.
