Australia will have to do without star fast bowler and captain Pat Cummins for the second Ashes Test at the Gabba because he is still recovering from a lingering back injury. Cummins has not played since July and also missed the dramatic victory over England in the opening Test in Perth.

Recovery Progress Delays Cummins’ Return

Pat Cummins is said not to have completed the full return-to-play programme for Test cricket despite bowling sessions in Perth and later in Sydney, and Australia have decided to be cautious over his availability. His progress pointed towards a possible comeback for the day-night Test that gets underway on Thursday.

Cummins will now join the rest of the squad in Brisbane on Sunday to continue his rehabilitation and prepare for a potential return in the third Test in Adelaide, starting 17 December.

Australia Stick With Unchanged Squad

The selectors have named the same 14-man squad that played in the first Test under stand-in captain Steve Smith. Injured seamer Josh Hazlewood, also recovering from a hamstring issue, is still unavailable, with no timeline provided for his return. Usman Khawaja holds his spot as opener, with Australia looking to carry on the early impetus of the series.

Cummins Eyes Adelaide Comeback

Missing the Brisbane Test gives Pat Cummins close to three more weeks to finish his recovery and reach full fitness. His possible reappearance in Adelaide will be all-important as Australia look to consolidate their advantage in the Ashes series.
