2025 US Open Championships Swimming: Athletes to watch
-
Penny McIntosh (Canada) is making a comeback after illness curtailed her autumn season. She’ll compete in five events, with the 400 freestyle and 200 butterfly as her strongest, and observers will watch how she adapts to her new Texas training environment.
-
Leon Marchand (France), a four-time Olympic champion also training at Texas, is focusing on sprints and stroke races rather than medleys, offering insight into his preparation for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
-
Women’s sprint events feature world-class matchups between Gretchen Walsh and Kate Douglass, bringing immediate depth to the 50/100 freestyle, breaststroke, and IM events.
-
Backstroke showdown expected between Hubert Kos (Hungary), fresh off two short-course world records, and South Africa’s Pieter Coetzé, who has been a breakout performer in backstroke this year.
-
Caeleb Dressel, eight-time Olympic gold medallist, returns after a break due to training changes and the birth of his second child. His performances in the 50 free, 50 fly, and 100 fly will be closely observed for signs of competitive sharpness.
