Over the years, the Indian Premier League has been a platform where young talent has risen to the very top of the game. Players like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Yuzvendra Chahal all found their footing in the IPL before becoming stars on the international stage.

The IPL 2026 Auction has now introduced another exciting prospect in Kartik Sharma. The 19-year-old grabbed attention after being picked up by the Chennai Super Kings for a massive 14.20 Crore. This article takes a closer look at who Kartik Sharma is and how his journey has led to this moment.

Who is Kartik Sharma? CSK’s 14.20 Crore signing at IPL 2026 Auction:

Kartik Sharma is a young wicketkeeper-batter known for his aggressive stroke play and ability to score quickly. At just 19, he has already built a strong reputation in domestic and age-group cricket, making him one of the most talked-about uncapped players at the IPL 2026 Auction.

Early rise through domestic cricket:

Kartik first made headlines during the Rajasthan Premier League, where his power-hitting performances caught the attention of several IPL franchises. His consistency and fearless approach at the crease helped him stand out among his peers.

Following his success in the Rajasthan Premier League, Kartik was invited for trials by the Rajasthan Royals in 2023. This opportunity came soon after the tournament and marked his first major step toward the IPL.

Breakthrough performances and growing reputation:

In the year that followed, Kartik’s progress continued at a pace. He drew interest from two of the biggest IPL franchises, the Chennai Super Kings and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

He went on to score a century on his Ranji Trophy debut and followed it up with a half-century on debut in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Although he narrowly missed out on selection for the U19 World Cup in South Africa, he remained a consistent run scorer across the U19 and U23 circuits. He is now counted among the top three hitters in age-group cricket.

Kartik also has a solid record in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scoring 334 runs in 11 matches across two seasons so far.

The bidding war that shocked the auction:

Kartik entered the IPL 2026 Auction as an uncapped wicketkeeper with a base price of 30 lakh. What followed was one of the most intense bidding battles of the day, as his price climbed all the way to 14.20 Crore.

This made Kartik Sharma the most expensive player ever bought by the Chennai Super Kings, surpassing their previous highest bid of 14 Crore for Deepak Chahar.

The bidding began with the Mumbai Indians, who soon dropped out due to budget limitations. Kolkata Knight Riders then stepped in, with Lucknow Super Giants also joining the contest. The battle between KKR and LSG pushed the price to 2.6 Crore before LSG exited. KKR continued to fight but was eventually outbid by CSK.

In the final stages, Sunrisers Hyderabad challenged CSK, but the Chennai franchise held firm and secured Kartik Sharma for 14.20 Crore.

Learning under legends at Chennai Super Kings:

Kartik Sharma now joins a Chennai Super Kings squad that blends experience with young talent. He will have the chance to learn under MS Dhoni, the most successful captain in IPL history, who has played a major role in shaping the careers of several young cricketers.

In addition to MS Dhoni, Dinesh Kartik will also share the dressing room with Sanju Samson, who was traded to CSK before the auction. With guidance from players who have extensive international experience, Kartik Sharma will be aiming to make the most of this opportunity and take the next big step in his cricketing journey.
