Pakistan Hockey Players Threaten To Boycott FIH Pro League

Pakistan men’s hockey is facing fresh turmoil as senior players have threatened to boycott the second phase of the FIH Pro League, scheduled for February in Australia, over a dispute regarding unpaid daily allowances.

Why Pakistan Hockey Players Are Threatening To Boycott FIH Pro League?

Players claim they were promised PKR 30,000 per day for the Argentina leg of the Pro League earlier this month but instead received PKR 11,000 per day, which they say is far below what was agreed. According to players, the promised amount equates to roughly USD 110, while the amount paid is closer to USD 40, creating significant financial strain.

At least two national team members have formally warned the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) that several players may refuse to travel if the issue is not resolved promptly.

During the Argentina phase, Pakistan played four matches and lost all four. The team is scheduled to play another four matches in Australia, but player availability is now uncertain due to the ongoing dispute.

The PHF has responded by stating that payments were made by the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), which follows a fixed policy of providing USD 40 per day to athletes competing internationally. PHF Secretary Rana Mujahid explained that while PHF policy supports a higher allowance, the federation has limited control because the PSB is funding the tour, including air travel, hotels, and daily allowances.

Pakistan’s participation in the FIH Pro League came after finishing runners-up at the Hockey Nations Cup in Malaysia. Although champions New Zealand earned automatic promotion, they declined to participate, allowing Pakistan to accept the invitation under FIH rules.

As tensions rise, the dispute threatens to overshadow Pakistan’s return to elite international hockey and highlights broader concerns about athlete compensation and sports governance in the country.

Pakistan are three-time Olympic champions in hockey and four-time Hockey World Cup winners.
