Australian Captain Alyssa Healy, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished cricketers in the history of the women’s version of the sport, has recently announced her intention to retire from the sport in all formats, following the upcoming home-series against India in the month of March in 2026.

At the age of 35, this decision means that the Australian women’s cricket team will be going into the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup without their long-time captain.

Why Alyssa Healy Chose to Retire Now

Alyssa Healy, in an appearance on the Willow Talk Podcast, revealed that her numerous injuries and her body type are some of the reasons she did not continue cricket.

“It’s been a long time coming. Not much in the way of injuries. You have to draw from the well, and the well is drying up,” Healy said.

She added, “Playing international cricket and completing my career at home, in front of our crowd, and facing one of our toughest rival nations, India, in our region, in what was arguably our biggest rival”

“Having a chance to finish there in front of my teammates and family, and against India, will be a truly special experience.”

Healy to Miss the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup

Alyssa Healy has confirmed that she won’t be a part of the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup, forcing some early changes in leadership within the squad.

“That means I’m not going to the T20 World Cup,” she says.

“It’s probably the right time to step away and give the girls an opportunity to prepare knowing I won’t be there.”

She shared that the decision had been in her mind for almost six months, adding that making it public brought a form of clarity and peace.

Leadership Transition for Australia Women

Healy will be stepping down, leaving the next World Cup campaign for Australia to be led by a different captain. The series in India, including the solitary Test that starts on March 6 in Perth, will thus be the farewell series and the transition phase for the next generation.
