Group 1 of the Super 8s stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is now completely open. India’s big loss and West Indies’ big win have caused a major upset in the points table. Therefore, every match in this group will now directly determine the semifinal race.

All four teams in this group South Africa, West Indies, India, and Zimbabwe have a chance, but their current points and net run rate mean a different path for each team. Let’s understand what each team needs to do to reach the semifinals.

Complete equation for all teams in Group 1 of the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 to reach the semi-finals

1. West Indies needs just one win

West Indies has made a strong start to the Super 8s by defeating Zimbabwe by 107 runs. They have 2 points and a net run rate of +5.35, the best in the group. They now have matches against South Africa and India.

If West Indies wins either of these matches, they will have 4 points, significantly strengthening their chances of qualification. Winning both matches will ensure they reach the semi-finals.

If they win one match and lose one, three teams could be on equal points, where their superior net run rate would give them an advantage. Losing both matches would only make their path difficult.

2. South Africa also needs a good win

South Africa has played one match so far and earned 2 points by defeating India. Its net run rate is +3.80. They now have to play matches against the West Indies and Zimbabwe. If South Africa defeats the West Indies, their semifinal spot is almost certain. Winning both matches will ensure they finish in the top two.

Even if they win one and lose one, their position will remain strong, as their net run rate is quite good due to a strong win over India. Although losing both matches could complicate matters, they still have a chance to qualify.

3. India needs big wins in both next matches

India has also played one match in the Super 8s so far, losing to South Africa by 76 runs. They currently have 0 points and a very low net run rate of -3.80. Now, India has to play their remaining two matches against Zimbabwe and the West Indies.

The easiest path for India is to win both matches. This will give them 4 points. If South Africa wins or loses both matches, India can qualify even without a net run rate.

But if South Africa wins one match and loses one, and the West Indies also wins one, the three teams could be tied on 4 points. In such a situation, net run rate will be crucial, as India currently trails. Therefore, India will need to not only win their next two matches, but also win by a large margin.

4. Zimbabwe is almost out, but still has a chance of qualifying

Zimbabwe suffered a crushing 107-run defeat against the West Indies in their first match, leaving them with 0 points and a net run rate of -5.35, the worst in the group. They now have to play against India and South Africa.

The only way for Zimbabwe to reach the semi-finals is to win both matches by a large margin. If they do so and the results of the remaining matches go in their favor, they could qualify. However, due to their poor net run rate, it will be difficult for them to advance in a tie, so they are considered out of the race for the semi-finals.

The race for the semifinals in Group 1 has become extremely exciting

No team has been eliminated from this Super 8 group yet, and all four teams have a chance. South Africa and West Indies are currently in a better position, while India and Zimbabwe need big results to make a comeback.

The upcoming matches could completely change the landscape of this group, and net run rate is emerging as the biggest factor here. The race for the semifinals is now wide open, and every match will be a knockout-like affair.
