What will Happen to India’s chances of Reaching the Semi-Final if Rain washes out the Game against West Indies

4 Min Read

India and West Indies will go head-to-head in a do-or-die game of the Super Eight leg of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Both teams will put their best foot forward in an attempt to win the match in order to qualify for the semi-final, where they will either meet England or New Zealand, depending on where they finish in the standings of Group 1.

The Chances

Realistically speaking, the team that wins the India vs West Indies game is expected to take the second spot in the leaderboard of Group 1, as it will take a lot of permutations to get ahead of South Africa on net run rate, which will come into play only if Zimbabwe beats them by a margin of approximately 150 runs.

The Math

However, only Zimbabwe beating South Africa and either team getting rid of their opponent in the second match won’t assure a top of the table finish as both of them will have to do what Zimbabwe does in the first match of the double header day which is to beat the other team by a huge margin to surpass South Africa’s net run rate and book a meating with New Zealand in the first semi final in Kolkata.

The Conditions

The question that has been asked several times in the build-up to the India vs West Indies game at the Eden Gardens is what happens to India’s chances if rain washes out the much-anticipated match, as it will lead to both teams finishing with five points in the bag.

The Situation

If we look at the points table West Indies have a higher net run rate than India, +1.791 to be precise while India’s net run rate as of now is -0.100 so if the game is washed out by rain it will benefit West Indies as the Shai Hope ledside will proceed to the semi final and will face England at the Wankheded Stadium whereas South Africa will take on New Zealand at Eden Gradens in Kolkata given that they win the match against Zimbabwe.

The History

If rain has the final say, it will be the second time since 2014 when a game that is a knockout match, at least that’s what the India vs West Indies match, for all practical reasons, is interrupted by rain involving West Indies.

The other match, which was hampered by rain, was the semi-final of the 2014 T20 World Cup between West Indies and Sri Lanka, which the Men in Maroon could havewon had the rain not intervened.

The Possibility

Amidst all the concerns about rain, if we look at the weather forecast for the day, there is 0% chance of rain with the temperature ranging from a high of 34 degrees Celsius to a low of 24 degrees Celsius.
