Highest Individual Scores For India In A T20 World Cup Chase: In what could be regarded as one of the biggest run chases in the history of India’s T20 WC campaign, Sanju Samson produced a masterclass innings of 97* to help India beat the West Indies in a crucial Super 8 match.

Chasing 196 against the West Indies in what could be regarded as a virtual quarterfinal, Sanju Samson’s innings not only ensured India’s place in the semifinals but also arranged a blockbuster showdown against the England Cricket Team on March 5th at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. But more importantly, the innings also finds a place atop the list of Highest Individual Scores For India in a T20 WC chase.

A Chase for the Ages – Samson’s 97* (50)

Samson was not even in the playing eleven in the previous match. Until this match, Samson’s highest score in the T20 World Cup 2026 was a mere 24 against Zimbabwe.

But on the biggest stage, he has given a knock that will be remembered for years to come.

Match Summary:

Target: 196

Final Score: 97* (50 balls)

Result: India won by chasing down 196

Milestone: Maiden T20 World Cup half-century (26 balls)

How Sanju Samson Turned the Game

Early Intent Against Akeal Hosein

India were 12/0 after two overs when Akeal Hosein was brought into the attack. Samson took immediate control of the situation with the following shots:

Opened his face to cut through cover-point

Hit a six over deep backward square leg

Pulled a short ball over deep mid-wicket

These three attacking shots changed the pace of the innings and put the West Indies on the back foot.

Steady After Early Wickets

India were also losing Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan before the powerplay came to a close. Samson was unbeaten on 24 (13) after six overs, a good start, though much more was needed as 196 was on the board. Samson went after Jason Holder, who had dismissed Samson four times in a row. A six in the 10th over helped Samson get his maiden T20 World Cup fifty in just 26 balls.

Middle Overs – Regaining Control

However, after Suryakumar Yadav got out for 18 runs, there was a slight halt in the innings as Tilak Varma got settled.

But from the 13th over onwards:

17 runs were scored off Shamar Joseph

15 runs were smashed off Roston Chase

Equation reduced to 60 off 36

The chase was back on track.

Tilak contributed a crucial 27 (15) before Shimron Hetmyer pulled off a stunning catch to dismiss him.

Composure at the Death

With 60 needed off 36, and then 17 off 10, Samson showed maturity. Hardik Pandya scored big shots to get the momentum, which allowed Samson to rotate the strike.

Then, as the equation was reduced to 7 runs off the last over, Samson made sure he finished the job he started by hitting two boundaries to get the victory. He remained unbeaten on 97 (50 balls)  one of the greatest chases by an Indian batsman in the history of the ICC.
