Lamine Yamal’s Late Penalty Rescues FC Barcelona In Dramatic Draw Against Newcastle

FC Barcelona were in action on Tuesday night at St. James’ Park against Newcastle United. In what was the first leg of the 2025-26 Round of 16 matchup, fans were entertained throughout the game with end-to-end action.

However, it was certainly not an easy outing for Hansi Flick’s men. Despite both teams creating chances throughout the game, the contest remained goalless until the 86th minute before the home side took the lead.

While it all looked set and done, Barcelona’s Dani Olmo did brilliantly to win the Spanish side a penalty kick late in the injury time. Stepping up to take the penalty, Lamine Yamal did a great job keeping his nerves at bay and tied the game 1-1.

While Newcastle created the majority of the big chances, they failed to capitalise on them, and it would most likely haunt them for having given away the lead. That said, it’s now all to play for at the Camp Nou next week.

Lamine Yamal creates FC Barcelona history with the late penalty

Lamine Yamal has taken the football world by storm ever since making his debut for the first team of FC Barcelona. The 18-year-old has shown maturity and game presence beyond his years, and this was on display yet again against Newcastle United.

The pressure is as high as it can get in a Champions League knockout game; top it with a late penalty to secure a point for your team, and even big players can fumble the chance. However, that wasn’t the case with Yamal.

As Yamal scored the late penalty to secure a draw, he etched his name in the history books of FC Barcelona by scoring the latest penalty ever scored by someone in Barca colors in the Champions League.

To be specific, Yamal scored the penalty kick at 95:50. While the 18-year-old did his job at St James’ Park, he, along with his teammates at Barcelona, will need to put on a much better performance next week to secure a place in the quarter finals.
