The FIFA World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world. This year, the competition is set to take place across three countries: the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Moreover, there is a major change to the format, making it the biggest World Cup of all time. 48 teams are set to take part, instead of the regular 32.

Ahead of the competition, fans are debating about who could potentially lift the trophy this year. The previous edition, in 2022, was won by Argentina, with Lionel Messi lifting his first World Cup. While they would certainly be in contention to defend the title, they have had a good chance of winning the tournament this year.

Who can win the FIFA World Cup 2026?

France

The 2018 winners and 2022 finalists are arguably the most favoured team to lift the FIFA World Cup this year. With a squad that boasts players like Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and several other top players, it is hard not to consider them the favourites to win the tournament.

Spain

After a few disappointing years, Spain certainly look back to their best heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup. They are currently one of the scariest sides in world football and would certainly be a threat at the World Cup. Their squad has world-class players like Rodri, Pedri, and rising star Lamine Yamal, giving Spain excellent ball control and attacking creativity. Some analysts even consider Spain one of the top favourites to win the tournament.

Portugal

While on paper Portugal are not the favourites to lift the World Cup this year, they are truly the underdogs that can shock the world. Moreover, last year in the UEFA Nations League, the Portuguese side beat Spain in the finals to lift the trophy. That means they do have the quality to take out the biggest teams.

Additionally, Cristiano Ronaldo will be playing in his last World Cup. The same has given immense motivation to his teammates for trying and winning it for him, the same way that Argentina did with Messi in 2022.
