The initial matches in IPL 2026, will probably not include Matheesha Pathirana, as he is nursing a calf injury. The Kolkata Knight Riders, have confirmed through their management, that the Sri Lankan bowler is in a rehabilitation program under the Sri Lankan cricket board’s supervision. According to the head coach, Abhishek Nayar, Pathirana is likely to regain match fitness by mid-April.
Setback for KKR: Matheesha Pathirana & Harshit Rana Likely Out
The woes of KKR’s bowling department have increased with the injury to Harshit Rana’s knee during a T20 World Cup warm-up match. Though he has not officially been ruled out, the franchise is already looking for alternatives. Nayar admitted that Rana’s absence would be a blow to the team, considering his contribution to the recent successes of the side.
Squad Changes: Mustafizur Out, Muzarabani In
KKR would also miss Mustafizur Rahman, as he has been released from the team. As a result, KKR has signed Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani as a replacement for Rahman.
However, KKR mentor Dwayne Bravo is confident that the team has overcome these losses, thanks to the bench strength in the pace department, which has the likes of Umran Malik, Vaibhav Arora, Akash Deep, and Kartik Tyagi in the team.
Confidence in Spin Attack and Team Depth
Bravo pointed out that KKR has one of the best spin attacks in the tournament, which could compensate for the loss of their fast bowlers. The official also commended Vaibhav Arora on his consistency and leadership in the bowling department for a number of years.
Varun Chakravarthy Form Not a Concern
Concerns regarding the recent poor form of Varun Chakravarthy in the T20 World Cup have been dismissed by the KKR management.
Nayar and Rahane are of the view that a short break before IPL 2026 will help the spinner get back to his best. Both Nayar and Rahane pointed out that it is common for a player to go through a dip in form in T20 cricket.
