RCB vs SRH: Ishan Kishan attributed two primary reasons for the defeat in their first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season against the Royal Challengers of Bengaluru (RCB) on Wednesday night a poor start combined with ineffective bowling.

Despite SRH posting a competitive target of 201 runs to win and scoring 80 runs off 38 balls including 8 fours and 5 sixes in his own right, there was little to show from his batting partners and also the bowlers when they were called upon. He was very open about the need to improve in many areas going forward for SRH to succeed this year.

3 reasons why Sunrisers Hyderabad lost in RCB vs SRH, IPL 2026

1. Losing Wickets in the Opening Overs Proved Costly

Ishan Kishan primarily attributed the defeat to the team’s poor start. SRH had lost 3 wickets for just 29 runs, placing the team under pressure right from the outset.

Abhishek Sharma was dismissed after scoring 7 runs off 8 balls, Travis Head for 11 runs off 9 balls, and Nitish Kumar Reddy for 1 run off 6 balls. Kishan acknowledged that losing early wickets in such a manner was detrimental to the team’s cause and that greater attention must be paid to this aspect moving forward.

2. Batsmen Failed to Read the Pitch Conditions in Time

In his statement, Ishan Kishan also noted that the wicket had become significantly better for batting after the first 3-4 overs. According to him, batting became much easier in the second innings, as the ball was coming onto the bat beautifully.

This can be seen throughout the match, as once SRH adapted to the conditions, their bowlers began taking advantage whereas RCB found it much easier to score and build partnerships.

The bowlers were not able to follow through with what they were supposed to be doing. Ishan said, After the innings, I thought we were going to struggle. With 201 runs on the board, it was clear that they (bowlers) would not hit their locations or use their plans to defend, giving RCB (batsmen) every opportunity to score with ease.

He further remarked that dismissing a batsman of Virat Kohli’s caliber early on is absolutely crucial; once he gets set at the crease, he becomes incredibly difficult to contain. In this match as well, Kohli rendered the contest a one-sided affair by scoring an unbeaten 69 runs off just 38 deliveries.

However, SRH’s defeat in this match was not solely attributable to these three factors, but rather to a series of minor errors. A poor start, a delayed understanding of the pitch conditions, and shortcomings in the bowling department collectively pushed the team toward a one-sided defeat.
