McLaren CEO Zak Brown has officially welcomed a major signing from Red Bull Racing, with Gianpiero Lambiase set to join the Woking-based outfit in the coming years.
Gianpiero Lambiase, currently serving as head of racing and race engineer to Max Verstappen, will leave Red Bull after his contract ends, which is expected before the 2028 season.
Until then, he will continue working with Verstappen, with whom he shares a strong and successful partnership.
New Role at McLaren from 2028
Zak Brown announced Gianpiero Lambiase has taken up the role of Chief Racing Officer upon his arrival.
Gianpiero Lambiase will be working closely with team Principal Andrea Stella in this newly created position.
Therefore, the addition of Gianpiero Lambiase is seen as a major enhancement to McLaren’s leadership structure as they continue to build on their recent on-track success by strengthening their Technical and Operational Teams.
Zak Brown On Gianpiero Lambiase Joining McLaren
Zak Brown shared his thoughts on the signing in a social media post, making his excitement clear.
He said, “Happy to share that Gianpiero Lambiase will join the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team as chief racing officer, reporting into team principal Andrea Stella, when his contract ends no later than 2028.”
He continued, “He joins an incredible team under Andrea’s leadership, and I’m excited about what we can achieve together.”
What This Means for Max Verstappen’s Future
Max Verstappen’s future in Formula 1 following the recent move has also become a topic of discussion again, especially now, given the questions being asked about the four-time world champion’s standing with Red Bull following a slow start to the current season and how he will approach that if he decides he wants to stay past 2026.
McLaren has also made their decision to sign one of Max Verstappen’s closest supporters as a means of positioning itself for potential future consideration by the Dutch driver if he entertains other opportunities.
The team is trying to meet the challenge of the current leadership, for the primary interest should be that Verstappen’s current team, Red Bull, remain outside of contention for championship titles.
