Sri Lankan all-rounder Dasun Shanaka has been banned for one season from playing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) as part of a contract dispute. The Pakistan Cricket Board made the announcement after reviewing his situation in detail.
Why Was Dasun Shanaka Banned?
In a press release from the PCB, Shanaka breached his contract with the Lahore Qalandars by withdrawing from PSL without getting an authorization from the Qalandars first. This was a violation of the Player Registration terms and the Tripartite Agreement. Therefore, Shanaka will not be able to play in PSL 2027.
Switch to IPL Sparked Controversy
Shanaka had originally signed with the PSL but chose not to fulfil that contract, opting to go to IPL as Sam Curran’s replace after three year absence from it.
The contract was financially rewarding:
PSL contract: Approx. USD 27,000
IPL contract: Approx. USD 214,000
Despite the high-profile switch, Shanaka has yet to feature in a match for Rajasthan Royals.
PCB Takes Strict Action
According to a PCB statement., there had been a full examination of the situation before determining the punishment imposed to Shanaka, but it was acknowledged that he got the punishment reduced due to his formal apology given to the PCB regarding his actions.
Shanaka stated in his apology that he did regret his previous behaviour as well as the disappointment that was caused to all those who support cricket, in addition to further clarification that he had no intention of participating in another league when he withdrew from the IPL.
Shanaka Offers Public Apologies
Shanaka apologized to:
Supporters of Pakistani Cricket
Fans of the PSL
Lahore Qalandars Team
He praised the PSL as an elite event and hoped to be back one day with full commitment.
Other Players Facing Similar Bans
However, Shanaka is not the only player currently under investigation by the PCB. In recent times:
- The Zimbabwean fast bowler, Blessing Muzarabani, was banned for two seasons for quitting Islamabad United to sign an IPL team
- The South African all-rounder, Corbin Bosch, too, was banned for breaching his contract
Nonetheless, Muzarabani’s punishment stands out as being the toughest although it has been contested as being harsh by his management.
Impact on Franchise Cricket
This conflict illustrates the rising tension between all global T20 leagues such as the PSL and the IPL and how these athletes have to make tough choices in order to manage their contracts and financial incentives versus their playing careers.
Also the IPL has incredibly high-stakes matches such as MI vs GT with huge media interest, therefore the competition between all of these different leagues is only going to become even more fierce.
