The NBA Western Conference is starting to feel like a two-team race, with the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs standing out from the rest. Both have handled their business so far in the playoffs, and both look capable of going all the way. Still, when you look a bit closer, there are small differences that could matter a lot as the pressure builds.

Oklahoma City come into this run with a big advantage. They already went through this last year and came out with the NBA title. That kind of experience is hard to ignore because it usually shows in tight moments. They carried that confidence into the first round this season as well, getting past the Phoenix Suns without too much trouble. It wasn’t just about winning the series; it was the way they stayed in control for long stretches.

A big part of that comes from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has been the steady presence throughout. He sets the tempo, takes over when needed, and rarely looks rushed. Around him, the team feels balanced. There are enough options on both ends of the floor, which becomes important once the matchups get tougher.

How have San Antonio Spurs been so far in the NBA season?

San Antonio have also looked solid so far. They got through the Portland Trail Blazers in the opening round, showing they can manage games when it matters. They might not have the same recent title experience, but they do have momentum and belief. Victor Wembanyama continues to be the key figure, and his presence alone changes how opponents approach the game.

If both teams take care of their second round matchups, they are likely to meet in the Western Conference Finals. That potential series feels like more than just a step toward the Finals. It could end up deciding who wins the NBA championship. Both teams have looked strong enough that whoever comes out on top there would probably go into the Finals as the favorite.

Right now, Oklahoma City still feel a step ahead. They have already handled the pressure of winning a title, and that usually counts for something at this stage. At the same time, the gap is not huge. The Spurs have enough quality to push them and possibly even come out on top if things go their way.

For now, OKC look like the safer pick. But if this matchup happens in the NBA conference finals, it could easily turn into the defining series of the season.
