Phil Salt is back in the United Kingdom for scans on his injured finger which has caused him to miss out on playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026 lately. He had a strong beginning to the season, but now both fans and the franchise are waiting for clarity on when he will be able to return.
How the Injury Happened
Salt injured one of his fingers on his left hand while diving to stop a ball at deep backward square leg during an April 18th match against Delhi Capitals. He has since been absent from three consecutive Royal Challengers Bengaluru games.
Strong Start to IPL 2026 Interrupted
Prior to his injury, Phil Salt was performing exceptionally well, having registered 202 runs across six appearances with an overall batting average of 168.33 while leading RCB’s innings from the onset of play; Therefore, losing this player has severely impacted RCB’s batting flow at this critical point in the tournament.
Jacob Bethell Steps In as Replacement
The lack of salt has given rise to another English player Jacob Bethell. He has been handed the responsibility of opening with Virat Kohli.
Though Bethell hasn’t shown any outstanding performance yet, he is likely to be given more opportunities in the team, having scored 39 runs in three innings. There is also another English batsman Jordan Cox who can be considered a replacement.
RCB Hopeful of Phil Salt’s Return
While Phil Salt injured, both him and RCB have hope he will be back with the team later this month. According to sources, management does not want to sign another player unless they are sure the injury will keep him out for the season.
Team Environment and Recent Form
Salt had previously commended the environment at RCB, saying that the leadership consisted of:
- Mo Bobat (Director of Cricket)
- Andy Flower (Head Coach)
- Dinesh Karthik (Batting Coach/Mentor)
This meant that his IPL performance was a successful revival after an underwhelming T20 World Cup performance for England.
RCB’s Current Situation in IPL 2026
After suffering a defeat by the Gujarat Titans, RCB is currently experiencing a hiatus halfway through the season. While some of their players chose to spend time travelling abroad specifically in the Maldives before playing their next game (against the Lucknow Super Giants).
