England skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt is expected to miss the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand and India because of an injury to her calf muscle. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that the ace all-rounder will need more time to recover from a minor tear in her left calf muscle while playing for The Blaze recently.

Nat Sciver-Brunt Injury Update Before T20 World Cup

Because of the injury, Nat Sciver-Brunt would be missing the six T20 matches that England is playing in its final preparations for the Women’s T20 World Cup. The initial reports after a speedy recovery revealed that the England captain needs more time to recover.

She was also unable to play in the ODI series against New Zealand because of the same problem. This is going to hurt England badly since she is such an important player for them, not only because she leads them but also because she is an all-around player. England batter Sophia Dunkley has said that Nat Sciver-Brunt will make it back for the World Cup.

“Nat just needs a little bit of extra time to be in the best place possible to be ready and raring to go for the World Cup,” Dunkley said.

England Squad Faces Multiple Injury Concerns

Preparations for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in England have suffered immensely due to injuries within both the ODI and T20 sides.

Fast bowler Mahika Gaur was recently ruled out due to a fractured foot, while Em Arlott continues to miss out on action due to concussion problems. However, Issy Wong was unavailable for the ODI series against New Zealand due to a hamstring problem but is now fit enough to play.

Sciver-Brunt has had her fair share of injuries in the past as well. She did not bowl at all last summer as she recovered from a long-term Achilles problem but made a successful comeback as an all-rounder in the ODI World Cup.

Danni Wyatt-Hodge Also Unavailable for New Zealand T20Is

Danni Wyatt-Hodge is another player who is likely to miss out on the T20I series after England confirmed that she will be unavailable due to her pregnancy. England selectors have named Maia Bouchier and Charis Pavely as replacements for the team.

Maia Bouchier made a mark in the ODIs against New Zealand, where she scored 59 runs in the first game played at Durham. Charis Pavely has been in excellent form in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup, having scored two centuries and three fifties in her first eight matches this season.

Charlie Dean to Lead England in Nat Sciver-Brunt’s Absence

As Nat Sciver-Brunt is not available for selection, Charlie Dean will continue to lead the England team in the upcoming T20I series. In the ODI series against New Zealand, Charlie Dean took charge as an interim captain and was appreciated for her leadership skills.

According to Sophia Dunkley, Charlie Dean has developed as a leader and is capable of continuing her good performance as an interim captain.

“She’s grown so much throughout her time in the England team to becoming a really great leader,” Dunkley said.

Sophia Dunkley Returns for England T20Is

Sophia Dunkley, who had to sit out from ODIs due to her knee problem, is back in action for the upcoming T20I series. She will be forming an opening pair with Maia Bouchier, since Danni Wyatt-Hodge is unavailable for the series.

The team hopes that the addition of the above-mentioned players will help them gain momentum before the Women’s T20 World Cup campaign.

Can England Cope Without Nat Sciver-Brunt?

The lack of Nat Sciver-Brunt means a huge void in England’s batting, bowling, and leadership department. But the management believes that their team is deep enough to perform well before the World Cup starts.

Now it would be up to the likes of Sophia Dunkley, Charlie Dean, and Maia Bouchier to do the needful for England during their vital T20I matches against New Zealand and India while waiting for their captain Nat Sciver-Brunt to recover.
