There are very few F1 races that can compare to the combination of the glamour, the history and the fantastic entertainment value of the Canadian Grand Prix.
The Grand Prix in Canada has been run at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal since 1978. It has given us historical moments on the track – like wins we will never forget and some questionable calls by the officiating team, and entertaining moments off the track that have gone on to become viral sensations on social media.
There are the iconic laps that created amazing rivalries between drivers, the celebrations after the race filled with emotion, the reactions of celebrities watching from the grandstands, and the occasional groundhog entering the circuit that make sure there is at least one unforgettable moment created at the Canadian Grand Prix every year that will become a permanent part of that event’s history.
Some of the most memorable moments in the Canadian Grand Prix’s history are listed below.
1. Sebastian Vettel’s Explosive 2019 Penalty Drama
The finish of the Canadian Grand Prix (2019) in Montreal is possibly one of the most controversial endings in F1 history.
After an incredible performance, it looked like Sebastian Vettel had taken Ferrari’s first (1st) victory of the season by starting in Pole Position, but on lap 48, between himself and Lewis Hamilton, he made a mistake at Turn 4, going off the track and into the grass.
After going off the track, when Sebastian Vettel rejoined the track, he cut back onto the racing surface, forcing Hamilton to back out of the throttle and creating a 5-second penalty for Hamilton for ‘unsafe re-entry’ by the Race Director. As a result of this penalty, Hamilton crossed the finish line after Sebastian Vettel, creating a ‘winner’ in Sebastian Vettel.
However, the biggest viral moment from the Canadian GP was actually after the race was over.
An incredibly frustrated Sebastian Vettel moved the Number boards in parc ferme, placing the Number ’1’ board in front of his Ferrari and the Number ’2’ board in front of Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.
2. Jimmy Butler’s Hilarious Hot Lap With Lando Norris
The reality of one wild F1 hot lap for NBA superstar Jimmy Butler happened in 2019, when he went for a wild ride with Lando Norris.
But from the time the lap started, Jimmy Butler was jokingly asking Lando Norris to go slow, and Lando Norris ignored him.
However, Jimmy Butler was certainly holding on for dear life and making some great faces during their hot lap around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
The video of them going for a ride together quickly spread throughout social media and became one of the most entertaining F1 videos of all time.
3. The Legendary Canadian GP Raft Races
In general, Formula 1 is usually about communicating huge amounts of money and engineering perfection. But the raft races of the Canadian Grand Prix were something entirely different.
Of the many funny traditions that happen over the weekend in Montreal, one of those would be that the F1 teams, FIA, engineers, media, and team principals build makeshift rafts within 45 minutes of racing them across a lake that is right next to the Circuit.
The raft races gained fame in the 1990s, and then they briefly came back in 2017.
While a few rafts were able to make it across the lake, most were not.
With all of the chaos of boats sinking, engineers running around in a panic, and team members completely soaked, the raft races have become one of the most cherished off-track F1 traditions.
4. Lewis Hamilton’s Emotional Ayrton Senna Tribute
During the 2017 Canadian Grand Prix weekend, Lewis Hamilton had an especially emotional experience after matching Ayrton Senna’s record of 65 poles with a race-worn helmet from the Brazilian legend’s family.
Lewis Hamilton, who has long regarded Senna as his boyhood idol, kissed the helmet in front of the crowd in Montreal and became very emotional as a result.
The grandstand erupted in applause, creating one of the most emotional moments in F1 racing history.
5. Alex Albon Accidentally Missed His Pit Box
This viral moment is not about any drama. In the 2025 Canadian GP, while benefiting from an FP3, Alexander Albon drove by his own pit box while being viewed by his crew.
That awkward moment went viral all over social media, where users started commenting on whether Albon did not know the location of the garage or if he was just enjoying another trip around the lane.
As this game is all about time, that video quickly went viral, and netizens found it funny.
6. Michael And Ralf Schumacher Made F1 History
The 2001 Canadian Grand Prix witnessed a family milestone that Formula 1 had never seen before.
Michael Schumacher won the race for Ferrari, while his younger brother Ralf Schumacher finished second for Williams.
It marked the first-ever sibling one-two finish in Formula 1 history.
The Schumacher brothers would later repeat the achievement several more times, but Montreal was where the historic family moment first happened.
7. Jean Alesi’s Iconic Celebration Ride
One of Formula 1’s most wholesome victory celebrations in history was Jean Alesi’s win at the 1995 Canadian Grand Prix.
Jean Alesi’s first F1 win had come on an exceptional day since it not only marked his first win after 91 tries, but he also won this day on his birthday!
What fans truly recall was Jean Alesi running out of fuel as he was on the cool-down lap when he was picked up by Michael Schumacher, who stopped his car to give Jean Alesi a ride back across the finish line on the top of his car.
That moment has since become one of the most iconic celebratory images in F1 history.
8. Lando Norris Rejected A Fan’s Marriage Proposal
One more moment from the Canadian Grand Prix 2025, including Lando Norris has gone viral.
As Lando Norris sat in his car, a fan in the grandstand gave a marriage proposal sign to him, which was captured on camera.
To the proposal, Lando Norris reacted with a very theatrical head shake. This Lando Norris’s humorous reaction went viral really fast, with netizens making memes on it.
9. Marshals Exhibition In 2024
Before the 2024 Canadian Grand Prix, heavy rainfall caused delays for sporting events at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
Marshals warmed up the crowd who were waiting for track activities to begin by exhibiting their own competition against each other at Turn 2.
To much surprise, spectators started cheering them on, and this entertaining scenario got viral on social media.
10. The Famous Groundhog Invasions
At present, the Canadian Grand Prix and groundhogs have become essentially synonymous.
The Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has experienced numerous instances of groundhogs during their race weekends due to the fact that groundhogs tend to wander onto the track and enter the circuit vicinity at dangerously close distances.
Over the years, visits from groundhogs have become the unofficial tradition at the Canadian Grand Prix and continue to generate a multitude of comical reactions from both racers, commentators, and spectators through all social media channels.
It would certainly be an unusual occurrence for a Canadian Grand Prix weekend to occur without at least one groundhog making their appearance.
So, overall Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has provided the setting for some of the most controversial Championship decisions, emotional tributes, odd celebrity sightings, legendary celebrations after races and complete pandemonium on the internet throughout multiple decades of Formula 1.
