FIFA World Cup 2026 is all set to kick off on June 11 with Mexico City’s iconic Azteca Stadium once again being in the limelight. However, this historic venue is set to become the first stadium in FIFA World Cup history to host the tournament’s opening match on three separate occasions, a feat that hasn’t been achieved by any sporting arena.
Azteca hosted the FIFA World Cup 1970 when Mexico and the Soviet Union played there in the opening ceremony. It was the first FIFA World Cup to be held in North America as well. And when the FIFA World Cup returned to Mexico in 1986, Azteca Stadium was again selected to host the tournament’s opener, further cementing its reputation as one of the most iconic venues in football.
Now, with the 2026 World Cup about to begin there, the stadium will have a unique record as the first ever to host three World Cup opening games. Azteca is popularly known for some of the most memorable football events – the Brazilian win the World Cup with the help of Pelé, whereas 1986 saw Diego Maradona score two of the most famous goals ever scored in the history of football – the infamous “hand of god” and “goal of the century.
This iconic venue has the same kind of distinguished history as far as its World Cup legacy, and perhaps one of the most decorated in World Cup history. This record will be extended considerably with the start of the 2026 tournament.
Azteca Stadium will script history after FIFA World Cup 2026
Azteca Stadium will become more historic following the opening FIFA World Cup 2026 games between – Mexico and South Africa. A total of 48 teams will participate for the first time in the mega tournament. The 48 teams will be divided into 12 groups, with the top two teams from each group along with eight top teams from the third spot will proceed further.
The renovations carried out in preparation for the event have not just been limited to making the stadium fit for hosting a global event like the FIFA World Cup, but they are also meant to ensure that the venue preserves its glorious history.
The excitement that surrounds Azteca is not limited to the actual matches alone. The stadium possesses a special sort of ambiance, having been the stage of some of the best times in football as well as its greatest legends. Azteca is no doubt one of the most iconic stadiums that exist within football. The place is known in World Cup history to be second to none, having witnessed some of the best matches of all time.
As it prepares to host its third World Cup opening match in 2026, Azteca will once again welcome the football world, providing the setting for the beginning of another global spectacle.
