Young Indian chess sensation, R Praggnanandhaa downed world chess champion Magnus Carlsen to bag the second position in the FTX Crypto Cup in Miami on Monday. The 17-year-old could not bag the title as Carlsen had a higher score, based on previous games. However, this performance against the world champion is another feather in the hat for the youngster, who is rising to fame in a short time period.

The teenager outclassed Carlsen in the blitz tie-break after the score was level at 2-2 at regulation time. Praggnanadhaa earlier defeated Carlsen in an online match in February. He also defeated Carlsen at the Chessable Masters online rapid chess tournament held in May this year.

He rose to fame in 2015 when he became the youngest international chess master in history at the age of 10. However, the teenager had a mixed outing in the Crypto Cup which affected his results to a great extent. After making a winning start, he lost two matches in a row to Quang Liam Le, the Vietnamese contender and his Polish counterpart Jan Krzystof Duda. The next two games of Praggnanandhaa ended in a draw and he won the fourth encounter to tie the positions.

FTX Crypto Cup is a live chess championship event in Miami. Each victory carries a prize of $7,500. The matches are played over four rapid games, with blitz tie-breaks in case of a 2-2 draw.
