Jasprit Bumrah was India’s pace spearhead for the ICC T20 World Cup. However, the 28-year-old is unlikely to play in the showpiece event with a shoulder injury. According to a PTI report, Bumrah will take around six months to recover. His absence is considered an enormous loss for Team India’s plans, ahead of the World Cup.

Nicknamed ‘boom boom’, the experienced Indian pacer was named the bowling captain during the Australian series by the team management. However, India will have to find a replacement for the leadership role and the opening pacer role that was done to perfection by the Indian pacer.
Who may replace Jasprit Bumrah?
Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Shami are the major replacement options for the new slot. The latter recently recovered from Covid and has had an impressive record in ICC tournaments in the past. This includes a hat-trick in the 2019 ICC World Cup.
Shami has the skill of taking key wickets. He also had a decent IPL in 2022. However, the factors that are levelled against the seasoned pacer are his fitness concerns and handling of death overs. However, Shami may get the nod if team management thinks that his experience can make him a like-to-like replacement for Bumrah.

Deepak Chahar is one of the talented swing bowlers who emerged in recent times. He is currently playing in the Indian T20 series against South Africa. Chahar made an impressive start by bagging two wickets in the seam-friendly conditions in Thiruvananthapuram. Coach Rahul Dravid is also impressed with Chahar’s ability. Currently, he is fourth in the pecking order. According to reports, Mohammed Siraj is also a contender for Bumrah’s replacement.
Why is Bumrah’s absence a big setback?
Bumrah is the second seasoned Indian cricketer who has been ruled out of the October event of injury. Earlier, star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja also missed out with surgery.

Bumrah’s lethal yorkers and wicket-taking skills with the new ball make him a special talent. His absence would mean India is playing without their strike bowler. Rohit Sharma and Co. will look to pick a suitable replacement and try to fill the void in the limited time that is in front of them.
