FIFA World Cup 2014: Controversies and Problems Recorded

4 Min Read

Football or FIFA World Cup has been at the centre of many controversies over the years, which is to be expected given the sport’s popularity and financial success. Many football players participate in affairs and other inappropriate behaviour that is embarrassing for the player and those around them when it is revealed.

There were numerous controversies and demonstrations at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, some of which occurred before the competition began. The Maracana Stadium had an unsteady improvised stairway, the monorail broke, and an incomplete bridge in Belo Horizonte collapsed. The most infamous instance of a player receiving a penalty was when Luis Suárez bit Giorgio Chiellini during a game.

The 2014 FIFA World Cup’s most controversial moment. The winner of Uruguay-Italy would advance to the Round of 16. The encounter was heated after Italian midfielder Claudio Marchisio was sent off for a reckless tackle on Uruguay’s Egidio Arevalo Rios. Suarez’s bite on Chiellini overshadowed that. FIFA investigated the whole situation. After the probe, FIFA suspended Suarez from nine international games and four months of football activity. Suarez apologized to Chiellini on Twitter a few days later. Suarez apologized to Chiellini.

Mexico had goals against Cameroon disallowed:

After the controversial Brazil-Croatia match, Mexico played Cameroon. Mexico-Cameroon was also in the news for the wrong reasons, like Brazil-Croatia. Linesman Humberto Clavijo erroneously disallowed Giovani Dos Santos’ two first-half goals. The first goal was ruled offside, although replays proved that Dos Santos was in line with the last Cameroon defender. Dos Santos’ second goal was likewise disallowed for offside, but linesman Humberto Clavijo failed to observe that a Cameroon player deflected the ball. Mexico triumphed after Oribe Peralta scored in the 61st minute. On 20 June, FIFA banned Humberto Clavijo from officiating any more World Cup matches for the disallowed goals.

Match Fixing Scandal:

After a humiliating 4-0 loss to Croatia in the group stage, the Cameroon Football Association announced on 1 July that they were investigating seven players for match-fixing. Wilson Raj Perumal, a convicted match-fixer, accurately anticipated the conclusion of the Cameroon-Croatia match, including the score and sending off of a player, according to a report in the German magazine Der Spiegel. FIFA declared, however, that there is no evidence of match manipulation.

Illegal FIFA World Cup 2014 ticket sales:

In Rio de Janeiro, FIFA’s ticket and hospitality partner MATCH’s English director, Ray Whelan, was detained for VIP World Cup ticket scalping. On 7 July, Whelan was arrested at the luxury Copacabana Palace Hotel. Rio police have charged him with selling tickets at a higher price. Whelan is innocent, so MATCH services support him. FIFA’s image was already tarnished by the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar bid bribery allegations, but this ticket scam has worsened it.
