Katherine Brunt was introduced to cricket by playing with her brother in the nets at the family’s club, Barnsley, where her father played for the 2nd XI. She was a skiddy fast bowler who played for Yorkshire at the Under-15 and Under-17 levels, but at the age of 17, she stopped playing county cricket because she was too fat and didn’t enjoy it.
Brunt returned two years later, slimmer and meaner than ever, inspired by her sister’s tremendous weight loss. She advanced from Yorkshire to Super 4s to England as quickly as her weight had decreased, and both transformations were the result of sheer tenacity and effort. She lost so much weight after a strict diet and workout regimen that some of her new England teammates didn’t recognise her when she showed up for the drawn Test match against New Zealand in 2004 at the age of 19.
The 2005 World Cup was then played in South Africa, although it was a disappointing experience for second-ranked England, who were eliminated by eventual champions Australia at the semi-final stage. Brunt, though, exacted retribution four months later, romping to England’s first Ashes series victory in 42 years while also collecting 14 wickets in the two Test matches.
