IPL Records and Statistics – Umpiring Records Made in the League

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India that has been scheduled to take place since its inception in 2008. In the fourteen seasons of the tournament, 54 umpires have officiated at least one Indian Premier League game. Sundaram Ravi has umpired the highest number of matches, having served as an umpire 122 times, while Subroto Das has officiated the lowest number, having served as an umpire in one match during the 2013 season. Asad Rauf and Rudi Koertzen officiated the first IPL match between both the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the Kolkata Knight Riders. 

29 of the umpires are of Indian origin, 7 are Australian, 5 are South African, 4 are from New Zealand, 3 are from England, 2 each from Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and a single is from Zimbabwe. Only 13 umpires have continued to serve in a single season. In this article, we will look at the top five umpires who have officiated the highest number of matches in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

  • Sundaram Ravi 

Sundaram Ravi’s name is well-known among the line-up of the Indian Premier League inspiring stories. After Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan, he was the 2nd Indian umpire to join the ICC Elite Board of Umpires. Ravi was a member there from 2015 to 2019. Over 100 international matches in all formats have been officiated by him. He was one of the umpires who officiated at the 2015 and 2019 Cricket World Cups. Furthermore, he has been a part of the Indian Premier League since 2009 and has umpired the highest number of matches, 131 in total.

  • Anil Chaudhary

Anil Chaudhary is a well-known figure in both the international and domestic circles these days. He is regarded as one of the greatest Indian umpires on the ICC’s existing global umpire panel. Chaudhary has umpired in a series of global games, including several ICC tournaments. After continuing to work as an official for several domestic series and the IPL, he was approached by the ICC to officiate the only T20 game during Australia’s 2013 India tour. This was a high-scoring match in which both teams managed to score over 200 runs, but India ultimately won by 6 wickets. The following month, he played in his first One-Day International (ODI) against India in Kanpur. Anil Chaudhary has been a part of the Indian Premier League for a long and has umpired the second-highest number of matches, 117 in total.

  • Kumar Dharmasena 

Kumar Dharmasena revealed plans to work as a competitive umpire after retiring from playing cricket in November 2006. In the period leading up to his retirement, he had umpired numerous domestic games in Sri Lanka’s significant first-class cricket tournament, the Sara Trophy. Kumar Dharmasena, one of the world’s top umpires, has officiated in 94 IPL matches and has been with the league since 2009. Aside from his colossal mistake in the 2019 World Cup final, the 50-year-old Sri Lankan is a respected umpire in world cricket, having officiated in 250 men’s international games.

  • Chettithody Shamshuddin

C Shamshuddin made his Indian Premier League umpiring breakthrough in 2012 and has since become a regular. To date, the 51-year-old umpire from Hyderabad has officiated in 89 Indian Premier League games. In addition, he has umpired 63 men’s international games and eight women’s international games. 

  • Nitin Menon 

Nitin Menon has the distinction of being considered one of the best, if not the best, umpires in India right now. Everyone was enthralled by his officiating during the Indian Premier League and home international matches over the last year. Menon has umpired in 89 Indian Premier League matches since his first appearance in 2016. The 38-year-old Indore native has officiated in 127 men’s internationals.
