The most international goals for England were now held by Harry Kane, who overtook Wayne Rooney during England’s opening match of the UEFA Euro 2024 Qualifiers.
Italy versus England was playing in a high-stakes international football match at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona (Naples). England defeated the most recent Euro champions by a score of 2-1 in that matchup of the UEFA Euro 2020 semifinalists.
In the first 12 minutes of the game, England’s Declan Rice scored the first goal. An effective penalty kick by English captain Harry Kane made the score 2-0 just one minute before the first 45 minutes were up.
Mateo Retegui, a 23-year-old making his senior international debut, cut Italy’s deficit to 2-1 in the 56th minute.
Luke Shaw was dismissed in the 80th minute for receiving two yellow cards. In the 78th minute of the game, the Manchester United defender received his first booking for wasting time. A poor foul on Italian forward Domenico Berardi earned him the second yellow card less than a minute later.
Nevertheless, England ultimately emerged victorious that evening with a 2-1 victory.
Harry Kane set a new record for most international goals for England with his one and only goal of the game. Kane scored his 54th goal for his country while Wayne Rooney, a former English star, held the previous record with 53 goals.
