Currently, MS Dhoni is leading the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 edition. They recently picked up their third win of the season in match 24 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Monday evening (April 17). Despite being rumored that this is Dhoni’s last IPL season, the 41-year-old has not provided any clarification on his future plans.
Even after retiring from international cricket on August 15, 2020, MS Dhoni remains a significant name in the world of cricket. During his illustrious career, he amassed 17,266 runs, 634 catches, 359 sixes, 195 stumpings, and led India to all three major ICC titles. Dhoni led India to victory in the 2007 T20 World Cup but suffered an early exit in the following edition in England in 2009. After India’s disappointing loss to hosts England in their second game of the Super Eight round at Lord’s London, Dhoni apologized to Indian fans for their poor performance.
India won the toss and elected to bowl first, limiting England to 153 for 7. Kevin Pietersen’s 46 and Ravi Bopara’s 37 were the highlights of England’s innings. In response, India promoted Ravindra Jadeja over Yuvraj Singh, but the decision backfired as the inexperienced spin-bowling all-rounder could only manage a scratchy 35-ball 25. Gautam Gambhir, Dhoni, Yuvraj, and Yusuf Pathan added runs to the board for India, but it was not enough as they could only score 150 for 5 in 20 overs.
When asked about his decision to promote Jadeja over Yuvraj, Dhoni said that sometimes you don’t know what will happen, and they thought Jadeja could stabilize the innings and attack the bowling. However, it did not work out as Jadeja was unable to find the gaps and kept finding the fielders. Dhoni admitted that the batting performance was poor and there were no excuses for not achieving the 153-run target. Dhoni also led India in every edition of the T20 World Cup from 2009 to 2016, taking them to the final in 2014 and the semi-finals two years later. Since their 2007 T20 World Cup win, India has not been able to lift the mega title again.
During his captaincy tenure, Dhoni also led India to the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy.
