T20 cricket was already a format more suited for the batters. When T20 cricket fever began batters knew they had hit paradise. With only 20 overs to bat, batters knew that they could now take more risks. In 2008 when the Indian Premier League began, the format somehow became, even more, batter friendly. In just the first game of IPL in 2008, Brendon McCullum scored an unbeaten 158. Here is a look at 5 instances of the highest totals scored by a team in IPL.
RCB’s 263 vs PWI (2013)
In April 2013, the ‘Gayle Storm’ hit Bengaluru in what could be the most memorable IPL innings of the tournament’s history. Chris Gayle scored the highest number of runs scored by an individual player in IPL history. Gayle took a heavy toll on the Pune Warriors India’s bowlers and scored 175 runs off just 66 balls. In an inning where AB de Villiers scored 31 runs off 8 balls, no one wanted him to face any ball as a double century was on the cards, the way Gayle was batting. From the bowling side, Bhuvneshwar Kumar starred as he conceded only 23 runs in 4 overs.
LSG’s 257 vs PBKS (2023)
Lucknow Super Giants is the latest entrant to this list as they scored 257 runs against Punjab Kings. In an inning where no one scored a century, LSG’s score becomes even more impressive. The carnage started off when opener KL Rahul got out and Ayush Badoni came at number 3. Kyle Mayers scored 54 runs off 24 balls while Badoni scored 43 runs in the same number of balls. At number 4, Marcus Stoinis walked in and 72 runs off 40 balls. Stoinis put on a show of hard-hitting batting alongside Nicholas Pooran who scored 45 runs off 19 balls. With the ball in hand, Rahul Chahar proved to be the lone warrior for Punjab as he conceded only 29 runs in his 4 overs.
RCB’s 248 vs GL (2016)
Making their second appearance on the list is Royal Challengers Bangalore. The West Indian giant this time could not make a contribution as he was dismissed for just 6 runs in 13 balls. His dismissal meant that ‘Mr. 360 degrees’ entered the field. Ab de Villiers alongside opener Virat Kohli put on a show of high-class batting. Both Kohli and de Villiers shared a partnership for 229 runs for the second wicket. Both of them scored centuries. Ab de Villiers scored 129 runs in 52 balls. Kohli scored 109 runs in 55 balls. With the ball in hand, Ravindra Jadeja bowled the most economical spell. Jadeja conceded 34 runs in 4 overs.
CSK’s 246 vs RR (2010)
Chennai Super Kings scored 246 runs against Rajasthan Royals in just the third season of the IPL. CSK opener, Murali Vijay scored 127 runs off just 56 balls. Along with Vijay, South African all-rounder, Albie Morkel also showcased his powerful hitting abilities and scored 62 runs in just 34 balls.
KKR’s 245 vs PBKS (2018)
Kolkata Knight Riders feature 5th on this list. From the KKR line-up, no batter scored a century. It was Sunil Narine who opened the batting and scored 75 runs off 36 balls. Along with Narine, captain Dinesh Karthik scored 50 off just 23 balls.
