The International Hockey Federation (FIH) asserts that “the origins of hockey are steeped in antiquity.” Historical evidence suggests that early versions of hockey were played in Ethiopia around 1000 BC, as well as in Egypt and Persia around 2000 BC. Subsequent evidence suggests that hockey-like games were played by the ancient Greeks, Romans, and Aztecs. In the Beni Hasan tomb of Khety, a ruler of Dynasty XI, there is an ancient Egyptian image of two individuals playing with sticks and a ball.

There is a comparable sculpture from Ancient Greece that dates to around 510 BC. It was likely given that name because a horn and a ball were used in the game. On how to interpret this picture, researchers disagree. It can have involved a group or individual action. Nearly identical representations of the game can be found in later European illuminated manuscripts and other works from the 14th through 17th centuries, which depict contemporary courtly and clerical life. According to billiards historians Stein and Rubino, it was one of the games that were ancient to lawn-and-field games like hockey and ground billiards.

The field’s dimensions are 91.4 m by 55 m (100.0 yd by 60.1 yd). Goals that are 2.14 meters (7 feet) high and 3.66 meters (12 feet) wide are located at each end of the field. There are also lines that run down the middle of the field and are placed 22.90 meters (25 yards) from each end line. The penalty spot, also known as the stroke mark, is a spot with a diameter of 0.15 m (6 in), and its centre is set at 6.40 m (7 yds) from the centre of each goal. 15 meters (16 yards) separate the shooting circle from the ground.

Two upright posts are used to create hockey goals, which are connected at the top by a horizontal crossbar. A net is positioned in front of the crossbar to collect the ball as it travels through the goalposts. Goalposts and crossbar specifications provide for white, rectangular goalposts and crossbars that are 2 in (51 mm) wide and 2-3 in (51-76 mm) deep. A backboard and sideboard are also included in hockey goals, and they both stand 50 cm (20 in) off the ground. The sideboards are 1.2 m (3 ft 11 in) deep, while the backboard spans the entire 3.66 m (12.0 ft) width of the goal.
