Position abbreviations

  1. AM – attacking midfielder
  2. SW – sweeper. A player who can play both offence and defence. He is given a free role, can act as a playmaker to some extent, and must also retreat behind the defensive line when the opposing team attacks.
  3. CB – centre back. In a formation, one or two centre backs are typically deployed.
  4. CF – centre forward. A player who stands in the centre of the offensive line as the attacker. Since only one or two attackers are frequently used in modern football, the term “centre forward” may not be entirely appropriate.
  5. LB – left back. resides in the defensive line’s leftmost position.
  6. RB – right back. Resides in the defensive line’s rightmost position.
  7. FB – Full Back. A different term for the defensive player who either plays on the left (left back) or right (right back) side of the field.
  8. LWB – left wing-back. placed outside on the “wing” and in front of the left back.
  9. RWB – right wing-back. placed in front of the right back.
  10. D – defender.

  19. ST – Striker. a comparable role to the centre and forward wings.
  20. IF – Inside forward. In the past, a five-man offensive line would have two inside forwards positioned between the center forward and the wing forwards, typically a little behind the other three attackers.
  21. OL – Outside left. Same as a left-winger.
  22. OR – Outside right. Same as a left-winger.

  3. AW – Away win
