Parmjeet Kumar, a top powerlifter from India, is confident about improving upon his 2021 bronze medal in the upcoming Para Powerlifting World Championships in Dubai. Parmjeet made a breakthrough in 2018 when he won a bronze medal at the Asian Para Games, marking his first international success.
After his achievement at the Asian Para Games, Parmjeet went on to secure a bronze medal in the men’s up to 49kg category at the Tbilisi 2021 Para Powerlifting World Championships. Now, as the Dubai 2023 World Para Powerlifting World Championships approach, Parmjeet is determined to surpass his previous accomplishments.
Parmjeet’s historic medal in the World Championships held significant meaning for para-powerlifting in India, being the country’s first-ever medal in such a competition. Personally, it was a dream come true for Parmjeet, and his achievement inspired many upcoming Para-athletes in India.
Parmjeet is particularly proud that his success has motivated young athletes like Seema Rani, who will also be participating in the upcoming Dubai 2023 Worlds. With the guidance of his long-time coach and India’s only Paralympic medallist, Rajinder Singh Rahelu, Parmjeet is confident in his ability to upgrade his medal color in Dubai.
In addition to his aspirations for the Dubai World Championships, Parmjeet plans to compete in the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Para Games. He believes that a strong performance in Dubai will set the momentum for his future endeavors.
Parmjeet, who has been training at the Sports Authority of India, Gandhinagar, aims to change the color of his medal in Dubai. He looks forward to the championship and anticipates tough competition from athletes like Tokyo 2020 Paralympic gold and silver medallist Omar Qarada and Le van Cong in the men’s up to 49 kg category.
Leading a 20-member Indian team in Dubai, Parmjeet will be joined by seasoned Farman Basha, the 2010 Asian Para Games silver medallist. The Dubai 2023 Worlds will see participation from 555 powerlifters representing over 80 countries.
