Announced by national selectors’ chairman Ajit Agarkar, the 17-member squad features renowned players like KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Jasprit Bumrah. Notably, Varma, despite being uncapped in ODIs, has earned a spot due to his potential.
During a press conference, Agarkar highlighted Varma’s potential demonstrated during his brief stint in T20Is. Praised by former cricketers for the selection, Varma himself expressed astonishment at the opportunity to debut directly in the Asia Cup.
In a conversation with BCCI.tv, Varma mentioned his dream of making an ODI debut for India, sharing his enthusiasm for this unexpected chance. He emphasized his confidence in excelling in ODIs, citing his success in List A cricket.
Varma, who also plays for Mumbai Indians in IPL under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, revealed the supportive nature of his captain. Sharma’s encouragement and guidance have boosted Varma’s confidence, allowing him to express himself on and off the field.
