Abhishek Sharma Breaks Suryakumar Yadav’s Record for Fastest 1000 T20I Runs: Indian batter Abhishek Sharma has created history by breaking the record previously held by captain Suryakumar Yadav. With a stunning performance, Abhishek became the fastest player to reach 1000 runs in T20 internationals, setting a new world record in the shortest format of the game.
Consistent Performances Lead Up to History
Abhishek Sharma’s journey to this milestone has been nothing short of impressive. He started strong with a half-century at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and continued to make useful contributions in the following matches at Hobart and Carrara. India chased successfully in the third T20I and then secured another win while batting first in the next game, thanks to a solid bowling performance.
The fifth T20I in Brisbane saw India lose yet another toss under captain Suryakumar Yadav. Australia’s Mitchell Marsh decided to bowl first, sending Abhishek and Shubman Gill to open for India before rain briefly halted play.
Abhishek Sharma’s Record-Breaking Feat
During that match at the Gabba, Abhishek Sharma etched his name in the record books. He crossed the 1000-run mark in T20 internationals, becoming the fastest player ever to do so in terms of balls faced. His milestone came during the fifth T20I against Australia, overtaking the previous record set by Australian power-hitter Tim David.
Tim David had achieved 1000 T20I runs in 569 balls, while Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav did it in 573 balls. Abhishek smashed both records by reaching the mark in just 528 balls.
Interestingly, Abhishek was dropped twice during his innings at the Gabba – once before and once after reaching the 1000-run milestone – but that didn’t stop him from making history.
Fastest Players to 1000 T20I Runs
With Abhishek now leading the list, the updated top three fastest to 1000 T20I runs are:
- Abhishek Sharma – 528 balls
- Suryakumar Yadav – 573 balls
- Finn Allen (New Zealand) – 611 balls
Tim David now sits sixth overall with 614 balls when his innings for both Australia and Singapore are considered.
Abhishek’s numbers are extraordinary – he reached 1000 T20I runs with a strike rate close to 190 and already has two centuries in his short international career. Since making his debut, he has also become India’s top run-scorer in T20Is, taking over from Yashasvi Jaiswal in the lineup.
Just Shy of Virat Kohli’s Milestone
While Abhishek broke one record, he narrowly missed another. He took 28 innings to reach 1000 T20I runs, falling just short of Virat Kohli’s record for India, who achieved the feat in 27 innings. However, Abhishek managed to do it in one match fewer, with Kohli having played 29 games to reach the milestone.
Meanwhile, Indian batters Sanju Samson (995 runs) and Tilak Varma (991 runs) are both on the verge of joining the 1000-run club, setting the stage for more milestones in the coming matches.
