The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2025 FP2 session just wrapped up, and it certainly brought plenty of action and surprises to the Yas Marina Circuit. With the season finale fast approaching, teams and drivers pushed hard to fine-tune their setups in conditions that were unforgiving yet exciting. McLaren’s Lando Norris was the standout today, clocking the fastest time with a slick 1:23.083, showcasing why he’s a major threat heading into qualifying and the race.
Max Verstappen And Mercedes Magic
Not far behind, reigning champion Max Verstappen put on a strong showing for Red Bull Racing, locking in P2 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2025 FP2 just +0.363 seconds slower than Norris. George Russell continued Mercedes’ solid form this weekend, narrowly trailing Verstappen by an extra 0.016 seconds, securing P3. The timesheet here was tightly packed, with the top five covered by just under half a second, the sign of a fiercely competitive grid as the season draws to a close.
Rookie Standout: Oliver Bearman
A huge talking point of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2025 FP2 was Haas F1’s Oliver Bearman, who impressed by grabbing P4, just 0.418 seconds off the pace on soft tyres, proving his potential on a big stage like Abu Dhabi. Kick Sauber had a strong day too, with Nico Hulkenberg snatching P5 and rookie Gabriel Bortoleto close behind in P6, both showing excellent pace on soft rubber. This bodes well for their race strategies come Sunday.
Midfield Battle
Midfield battles in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix 2025 FP2 are set to be intense with Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc locked in closely at P7 and P8, respectively. Even Fernando Alonso hasn’t lost his edge, slotting into the top 10 with P9 while Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli delivered a solid P10.
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri claimed P11, a reminder that the team’s pace extends well beyond just Norris. Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll lurked at P12 with Williams’ Carlos Sainz not far behind in P13, showing reliability on the harder medium tyre compound. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton managed P14, crucial as he battles to regroup after a challenging season.
Rounding out the top 20, we saw fights at every level: Albon, Ocon, Tsunoda, and Lawson all within striking distance but unable to crack the top 10. Alpine drivers Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly closed the gap further down, both pilots trying to extract every ounce from their cars in tricky conditions.
