Adarsh Singh of India almost missed qualifying for the Paris Olympics when he placed ninth in the Men’s 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event at the current International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Championship (All Events) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) announced in a release here on Tuesday that Adarsh fired 583 in the qualification round, the exact same score as Denys Kushnirov of Ukraine who earned the sixth and final slot in the final.
However, as matters stood, Estonia’s Peeter Olesk, who also shot a 583 but ended one spot ahead of Adarsh on countback, was awarded the fourth and final Paris quota available in the competition. China, Japan, and Ukraine received the other quotas for the tournament, accordingly.
Vijayveer Sidhu, one of the other Indians competing in the competition, shot 577 to place 25th out of 76 players, and Anish shot 575 to place 32nd.
With four gold and three bronze medals, India is still in third place overall, trailing only world powers China and the United States. So far in this competition, 26 out of the 101 competing nations have taken home medals. Additionally, three Olympic berths for the Paris Games were acquired by India from the competition, bringing their total quota haul to six.
The Men’s and Women’s Trap Shooting competitions get underway on Wednesday, with the finals taking place on Thursday.
