The Cincinnati Bengals is a professional American football team that represents the state of Ohio in the National Football League (NFL) as members of the American Football Conference (AFC) (NFL). Since their 1968 debut in the AFL, the Bengals have been one of the league’s most successful franchises. Former NFL head coach and one of the Cleveland Browns’ founders, Paul Brown, is widely considered among the sport’s best.
Two seasons were all Cincinnati spent in the AFL before the league merged with the NFL in 1970. The Bengals had their first two postseason victories in 1981 and went on to play in Super Bowl XVI the following January, where the San Francisco 49ers defeated them. Following a strike-shortened 1982 season, Cincinnati made it back to the playoffs but was eliminated in the first round. The Bengals have competed in three Super Bowls and call Cincinnati, Ohio, home (1982, 1989, and 2022).
